Dog walkers heel

Achilles tendinitis and Plantar fasciitis is a painful foot I just affecting dog walkers in flip flops in warm countries.

“Dog walkers heel” develops over time when wearing flip flops to walk the dog. It leads to fallen arches giving plantar heel pain and Achilles tendinitis. Wearing supportive shoes such as sports shoes when out walking the dog can help alleviate the symptoms. In cases where the foot has displaced and wearing sports shoes is not enough to help the foot injury fully recover, a corrective orthotic to lift the foot arches is made from a cast of the foot. These should be worn for 6-12 weeks in shoes to realign the foot again.

I’ve been wearing flip flops to walk my dog for years but in the last 4 months my heels have been really hurting. Left more than the right. Now I think this might be why. I live in Dubai and would like to see someone about fixing my heels. Cheers, Den

Dear Den, yes best to come in to see the Podiatrist, Michelle Champlin. Bring your old flip-flops and they will be assessed. Also bring an existing pair of sports shoes for analysis. Best wishes, Dubai Podiatry Centre

My heel is so painful – not when I’m walking my dog but later in the day after I’ve been sitting for a while and now I am thinking it is because I’m wearing flip flops for walking in the morning. I’ll try changing to sports shoes and if it still hurts I’ll make an appointment. Thanks, Barry

Dear Barry, If the heel continues to h hurt after changing to sports shoes after 1 week then come in and see the Podiatrist, Michelle Champlin. Bring the flip-flops and sports shoes with you to check what may be causing the problem. Also bring a pair of shorts for lower limb alignment assessment. Best wishes, Dubai Podiatry Centre

Is there a special sports shoe to wear or any one will be OK? Maria

Dear Maria, the sports shoes should be well fitting and moderate to firm soled. Sometimes if the sole is too soft it can cause excessive expansion of the foot and this causes heel pain. It also depends on the weight of the person. The heavier you are the former the sole. The lighter you are the softer the sole can be. Suggestions can be made at good sports shops for the best shoe for your foot type etc. Best wishes, Dubai Podiatry Centre

I’ve been walking my dogs on the pavement in flip flops because they are so easy to put on. I hadn’t realised the damage I was doing because I have this problem in both heels and didn’t link the two together. Can I have an appointment please? Cheers, Ed
