What are water shoes?
A water shoe is a type of protective footwear typically used for activities where the feet are likely to become wet, such as kayaking. Water shoes are usually made of mesh to allow drainage out of the shoe and have a hard sole used to protect against cuts and abrasions when walking in wet, rocky environments.
Water shoes are also used to protect people’s feet in waters with sharp-rocked floors, marine hazards such as zebra mussels or other potential trauma causing objects – in which case their primary purpose is not to keep the wearer’s feet dry. Water shoes are great for everywhere from desert oases to the beach or pool. They offer increased protection compared to flip flops and are designed to be worn in the water as well, offering additional protection. As they are fully enclosed, they are attached securely to your feet – when wet, there is a risk of spraining your ankle when slipping off of flip flops. Flip flops can also encourage you to overpronate, when worn to walk for longer periods than the purpose they were designed for – poolside or to the beach.
Marine Trauma Protection
Chief Podiatrist Michelle Champlin says that they have removed over 70 sea urchin spines also from a scuba diver’s heel, who slipped on rocks when jumping off a dive boat. Such injuries are not only extremely painful but can lead to infection, difficulty walking and time off work.

Water shoes protect your feet in and beside the water – from beach to pool
Other common traumas include standing on broken glass whilst at the beach – medical attention is essential to ensure no glass is left in the cut, that the wound is cleaned and dressed appropriately. Mrs Champlin has also seen painful burns to the foot, caused by accidentally standing in very hot sand where a barbecue had been set on the beach.
Protection from Infection
Apart from trauma related foot injuries, water shoes can also save you from picking up either fungal or viral foot infections. Verrucas, a common viral skin infection (also known as plantar warts) thrive in warm, moist environments such as poolside, waterparks and changing rooms. Wearing water shoes around the pool and changing rooms and at waterparks can greatly reduce your risk. If you are unlucky and pick up a verruca infection, Dubai Podiatry Centre has pioneered a highly effective treatment called Dermojet, which is typically a one off, no-needle, no-surgery treatment.
Protection For Impaired Sensitivity
Those with impaired sensation in their feet, perhaps due to conditions such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, should consider wearing water shoes pool and beachside too. Mrs Champlin has treated burns to the soles of the feet which occurred throughout a hot summer’s day in Dubai with the patient walking barefoot on concrete at a resort and being unaware of the hot surface burning the skin. Temperatures on the sand and man made surfaces can reach temperatures high enough to burn skin within a few steps in the hot climate here in the Middle East.
