Depending on the severity of the toenail issue, such as a minor cracking of the toenail – this can be fixed easily by drilling. The pedicurist can do this in one of our most popular procedures, a medical pedicure. The pedicurist will make your toe nails shine and will paint on an anti-fungal nail lacquer onto the toenail that will stop any fungus from growing anymore.
Although, if it is a more prominent toe nail issue such as the nail collapsing and curling at the side, separating from the skin due to the curvature of the toenail, becoming white and yellow in colour, etc. then this is highly likely due to a fungal infection. The whole toe nail may have to be removed and the patient will take an oral anti-fungal medication for a month and let a new toenail grow back. This entire process will take about 1 year – 1 year and 6 months for the whole nail to grow back again, healthy and pink.
Another tip for fungal toe nails is after showering I suggest using a hair dryer for underneath the toenail to make sure no moisture is there. Then, use a Lamisil spray underneath the nail, this spray is an anti-fungal alcohol-based spray to ensure no fungus will grow.
If you are going to use home remedies such as pure tea tree oil which is extremely strong, please proceed with caution. Using pure tea tree oil incorrectly may cause further damage such as burning the skin or stopping the new nail from attaching, so I suggest using it a certain way. For example, if you are going to use pure tea tree oil it should be only a few drops in a carrier liquid such as almond oil. Never put pure tea tree oil straight onto the toenail or the skin as it will burn.
To correctly diagnose any toenail related issues you may have, please book a consultation or medical pedicure.
