How is a Fungal Nail Infection Diagnosed?

Do you think you might have a fungal toenail infection? It is important to see a Podiatrist to ensure the correct diagnosis and therefore appropriate treatment. At Dubai Podiatry Centre, we have seen pretty much every form of fungal skin and nail infection imaginable, and it is generally quite straightforward and easy for us to diagnose a fungal nail infection based on signs and symptoms – colour, appearance, debris, even the distinctive odour.
Sometimes, we may also take a sample clipping of your nail to test in the laboratory – a fungal culture.
However, here at Dubai Podiatry Centre, we always want to rule out any underlying issue to check that a fungal nail infection is not a sign of something else allowing it to flourish – such as blood sugar being too high (diabetes) or a circulatory issue. We take a holistic, investigative approach at Dubai Podiatry Centre and always look at the ‘big picture’ of your overall health – often our feet and nails are whispering to us clues about your overall health.
Fungal nail infections can last for years and will not go away on their own without treatment. Fungal nail infections will spread across the nail and even to the nail bed and root if left untreated. In these cases, topical treatment alone will not be effective as you are only treating the exposed surface of the nail. Find out more about some of the treatment options here.
