How long do you wear orthotics for?
Corrective orthotics can be worn for as little as six weeks to achieve results, or longer as advised by your Podiatrist. Corrective orthotic therapy treatment duration will be estimated by your Podiatrist and will depend on a number of factors, including:
• How much and how often you wear your orthotics
• How much sports / physical activity you do
• Whether you’re a child and in a growth spurt (growth hormones) or an adult
• Severity of malalignment being corrected.
Are custom orthotics different to those bought in a shop?
Unlike shoe inserts or insoles bought over the counter, custom-made orthotics are built from moulds of your feet to meet your unique needs and prescription. In our opinion, the best outcomes are achieved by the treating and assessing Podiatrist making your orthotics and then following up on your progress, rather than sending off to a factory to have these made. Factory or generic insoles may offer some degree of correction, but will more than likely not be precise and at worst may actually damage or worsen your foot alignment, especially if not fitted or provided by a qualified Podiatrist. Insoles providing cushioning for comfort, for example, can be great, and there is a place for shop insoles – the key is to understand the difference and be aware of the limitations of general insoles. As a general rule, foot pain should never be ignored and should always be investigated by your Podiatrist, especially foot pain or lethargy in children.
Chief Podiatrist Michelle Champlin has also developed a specific type of sports orthotic, initially for professional athletes in rugby and football requiring highly specific degrees of correction yet ultra slimline design for pro boots. These have been rolled out to amateur athletes, other sports and even for high fashion designer dress shoes offering little extra room within the footwear. Such advanced bespoke orthotics are simply not available elsewhere.
Whilst over the counter, generic manufactured insoles or even those ‘customised’ to some extent by adding a wedge or some padding may offer some short-term relief, they will likely not fully correct an underlying anomaly or offer the most precise degree of treatment provided by qualified Podiatrists who make their own orthotics. Orthotic therapy is generally an ongoing process with one or more adjustments required to progressively improve alignment until the desired target is achieved. When insoles have been purchased from a shop or manufacturer, it is unlikely that they will be of a quality or standard that is able to be adjusted, or that a professional is on hand to monitor or adjust on-site. Just as braces are tightened over time by a dentist, the providing foot health professional has a duty of care to assess and diagnose, oversee treatment, to understand the specialized field of foot and leg biomechanics and to be capable of adjusting the orthotics accordingly.
