Your Perfect Size for Hiking Boots

September 22, 2025 by Dubai Podiatry Centre0

For avid mountaineers, I recommend wearing hiking boots at least 3 shoe sizes larger than your foot size.

For example, a month ago I hiked Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. My foot size is 36 and my mountain boots are size 40 – that is 4 shoe sizes in difference! This is because I wear toe socks which means that no blisters will form in between my toes, then I wear thick hiking socks over the toe socks. These hiking socks are very fluffy and thick but it does not make my foot hot, it almost takes the moisture away. This combination takes up a lot of space which is why I opt for a shoe size 40.

Then, when I’m walking back down a mountain and there is that little bit of extra slide inside the boot, there is a special way to tie the boots to stop your foot sliding so far forward. However, if you tie them too tightly your toes will go numb so your foot should still slide a little bit forward. You should never feel your toes touching the end of the shoes.

If you are about to embark on an expedition, I recommend visiting the clinic with the shoes and socks that you will be wearing to thoroughly check and avoid causing any future foot-related injuries or issues and ensure a successful adventure.
